As a small child I rarely took naps. I was told by my mom that I was “too afraid of someone throwing a party while I was asleep”. This finally sunk in as a young teen and I finally began to realize that it was true! I can’t stand missing out on a party. Imagine this: you’re sleeping, then a huge party (strictly fun) was thrown in your home but you were too busy sleeping that you miss out? You’d feel pretty upset that you weren’t able to stay up, right? Well these people were not so worried about missing out. In fact, they did just that.
Now they weren’t caught sleeping but they were caught off guard and unprepared.
We’ll pick up in verse 7:
Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ (Matthew 25:7, 8 ESV)
The virgins in this story are us. We, as the church are Jesus’ bride and He is the bridegroom; Ephesians 5 solidifies that. There are 10 of them, 5 wise and 5 unwise. The wise were prepared with extra oil for their lamps for they didn’t know when the bridegroom would come. The unwise on the other hand were not prepared and didn’t take enough oil for their lamp.
As the bridegroom was delayed they all fell asleep and upon the announcement that the bridegroom was coming all 10 arose and went to meet Him. Soon after waking up the unwise knew they did not have enough oil, so they begged to have some of the oil of the wise, but the wise knew they would not have enough for themselves and the others so they sent the others to go buy their own. (Matthew 25:7-9)
They were not prepared for the duration of the trip. They had not brought with them enough oil to meet the bridegroom. Many times in our life as humans we are not prepared to meet the bridegroom, Jesus Christ, yet He shows Himself to us numerous times. Often, like the unwise, we have consumed our time with things that should have been taken care of before. No it’s probably not oil but for each person has a different hinderance.
And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. (Matthew 25:10 ESV)
Jesus comes but they weren’t ready. They didn’t even see Jesus let alone meet Him.
Those who were ready received the ultimate honor. Not only did they gain entrance to the wedding feast, but they got to see the bride groom, Jesus. They got to meet Him and then enter into the wedding feast; what a thought! The feast is Heaven, the bridegroom is Jesus, and we can be the wise. We have the opportunity to join Him in His wedding feast in Heaven but we also have another choice: we can miss out on the opportunity of knowing, meeting, and having a relationship with Jesus Christ and have happen to us as what happened to the unwise in the parable.
Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ (Matthew 25:11-12 ESV)
The door to heaven was shut for them. Even after their cries and petitions Jesus tells them, “I do not know you”. They missed the chance to begin a relationship with the savior of all humanity because they didn’t pack enough oil! Do you understand how minuscule oil is? But yet it kept them from a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. A small bit of oil kept them out of heaven and the eternal party that will take place there with the guest of honor being the God of the universe and His son Jesus. That’s a party you want to be in.
Don’t get left out of the wedding feast Jesus wants to have you involved in.
